Tips on Exercise:
Set aside time for exercise on a daily basis(weight training and/or cardio). If you have ever read the “7 Habits of Highly Successful People” you know that every week you are supposed to place your “big rocks” on your calendar. These are important things you need to do and place them on your calendar ahead of time. Exercise should be one of your “big rocks” scheduled ahead of time each week.
Live an Active Lifestyle
Find things you enjoy such as hiking, walking, swimming, tennis or yoga. The goal is to find something you enjoy so that you are more likely to stick to it. That said, growth comes from a place of discomfort. You must push your boundaries.
Consistency is key as you want exercise to be an integral part of your routine. Experts agree 5-6 days should be your goal (yes it can differ depending on your goals and health status). Make sure you are resting 1-2 days per week. Rest is equally important.
No, the gym is not the only place you can work out. If you are uncomfortable with the notion of working out at a gym, there are many other ways to work out. You can hire a personal trainer or workout at home with an OnDemand workout plan. You can go for a run by the beach, workout at a park with a bench, do yoga at a small studio, literally anywhere.
If you struggle with motivation, find an online community or workout program you can join. A gym can also help with motivation. When you think everyone is watching, you are more likely to not give up and try harder. It depends on the person and it is different for everyone. Find out what works for you and stick to it.
Celebrate the Successes
Start slow and celebrate the successes. Whether it’s your first full push up or pull up or simply completing your first 20 minutes of exercise, you need to celebrate. How about buying the new sneakers you have been eyeing? You can celebrate in many ways so do what’s right for you as long as it builds on what you are looking to accomplish.
Form is Key
Always make sure you understand the exercises in order to prevent injury. Form is so important and there are so many video instructions online that can help with form. Always opt for form over reps. If it hurts, you are probably doing it wrong (not to be confused with the burn you will feel in your muscles, that you are supposed to feel!).
Hydrate, hydrate. Water is so important to our wellbeing. A basic way to calculate how much water you should be drinking = (weight) * (2/3) + 12 oz for every 30 minutes of exercise.
